Jeff Hoppa: Joshua Tree Paintings

This exhibition by Indian Road Shows Curator Jeff Hoppa features oil on panel paintings created during and inspired by his time as Artist-in-Residence at California’s Joshua Tree National Park in 2007 and visits to the adjacent Mojave National Preserve in 2008.

Work is on view at Indian Road Cafe from January 20 to March 2, 2019. There is no reception.

Hoppa says, “My work is about time, time spent drawing, the collapsibility of time in the studio, the frustrating finitude of time. It’s about travel fever, the end of the road, the traverse, the inch and a half past the edge of the map. It’s about the love of work. It’s about repetition and improvisation. It’s about natural history museums, deserts, Apollo 11, icebergs, time capsules, Carl Akeley’s African Hall, boxes full of narwhal ear bones, William Beebe’s bathysphere, Cook and Peary’s race to the pole, Theodore Roosevelt and Herman Melville, Roy Chapman Andrews and The Explorer’s Club, Big Sur, gravel roads in Baja, and golden records on spacecraft leaving our solar system.”

Jeff Hoppa holds an MFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, and is Founder and Executive Director of cornerstone STUDIOS, an artist's studio work space in Washington Heights, NYC. In 2013, in collaboration with Indian Road Cafe owner Jason Minter, Hoppa created "Indian Road Shows." Since then, he has curated 56 exhibitions at Indian Road Cafe. This show makes 57 (thanks Jason).

Indian Road Cafe is at 600 West 218th Street, New York, NY 10034, adjacent to Columbia University's Wien Stadium. Take the A train to 207th Street or the #1 train to 215th Street.
